What is Mobility?

A simple fitness definition of mobility is the ability to move a limb through a range of motions; it is an activity which mainly involves your joints. Flexibility: which is related but not the same—is the ability of a muscle or muscle groups to lengthen passively through a range of motion; it mainly involves ligaments. Our knowledge of mobility exercises has grown so much over the past ten years which allows all of us to actively manage our own mobility.

Why is Mobility Important?

We are all born with optimal mobility; over time repetitive stress, age and/or injuries reduce our mobility and mobility work is regaining what was lost. A rule of thumb is your age is an estimate of the percentage of your exercise time which should be spent on mobility ( e.g. 60-year-old who does not move as well and has aches and pains should devote 60 percent of their time to movement while the remaining 40 percent is reserved for strength training and other performance related goals.
